Magnat is a free multiplayer board game you play in your browser, with no sign-up and no download. With 2 to 6 players, roll the dice, buy cities all over the world, build houses and hotels, and be the last player standing before bankruptcy.
Each player starts with 1,500 € and collects 200 € every time they pass Go. On your turn, roll both dice and move your pawn. A double lets you roll again.
The room host sets up the game before it starts: starting money, Go bonus, auctions, Vacation jackpot, turn timer, random player order and more.
In board games like Magnat, you roll two six-sided dice. Luck decides, but not just any way: some totals come up far more often than others. Knowing these numbers helps you choose which cities to buy and when to take risks.
A fair die has six faces. Each one has a one in six chance of coming up, about 16.7%. The average result of one die is 3.5.
With two dice there are 6 × 6 = 36 combinations, all equally likely. But several combinations give the same total: 7 can be made six ways (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1), while 2 only comes from double 1s. Here is the full table.
| Total | Combinations | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 in 36 | 2.8% |
| 3 | 2 in 36 | 5.6% |
| 4 | 3 in 36 | 8.3% |
| 5 | 4 in 36 | 11.1% |
| 6 | 5 in 36 | 13.9% |
| 7 | 6 in 36 | 16.7% |
| 8 | 5 in 36 | 13.9% |
| 9 | 4 in 36 | 11.1% |
| 10 | 3 in 36 | 8.3% |
| 11 | 2 in 36 | 5.6% |
| 12 | 1 in 36 | 2.8% |
The average total is 7. Totals of 6, 7 and 8 together come up in 44% of rolls, almost one roll in two. On the other hand, a 2 or a 12 only shows up about once every 36 rolls.
Since a double lets you roll again, a turn moves you about 8.3 squares on average, not just 7.
In Magnat, you can try for a double for three turns to get out for free. The chance of missing one turn is 5 in 6, so the chance of missing all three is (5/6)³, about 58%. In other words, you have about a 42% chance of getting out for free with a double. Early in the game, when many cities are still for sale, paying 50 € to get out right away is often better than waiting.
On DropDice, the dice are rolled by the server, not by your browser: no player can cheat them. Each face has exactly a one in six chance of coming up.
Sign in with Google, Discord or your email address (account icon at the top of the page): every win is kept on your account and unlocks accessories for your pawn. Pick one on your profile page: everyone sees it in the room and on the board. Only official wins count for most of them (games between players, without bots and not suspicious); the clown nose, the cap and the bunny ears also accept wins against bots.
